Between Emotion and the Laws of Nature

UNDULATION

UNDULATION is an art project by Kwaika that continually explores the question “What is existence?” through the fluctuations of light, time, matter, and emotion. Using industrial materials such as silver, gold, iron, and resin, the project transforms phenomena such as reflection, heat, layering, and change into artworks. The works transcend the materials themselves and emerge as events that occur at the boundary between perception and phenomenon.

BODIES
The weight, hardness, heat, and marks inherent in materials such as metal and wood. In the “OBJECT” series, the acts of “twisting,” “cutting,” “burning,” and “joining” applied to these materials are preserved as the very essence of the sculptures themselves. These works are neither functional objects nor mere sculptures. They are a collection of works that give form to the relationship between the objects themselves and the forces that acted upon them.

Michelle & Caligo
Michelle & Caligo. Light calls forth shadow, and grace is supported by strength. When opposites vie for dominance within a single form, a quiet tension—like that of a taut string—takes hold. This luxury collection gives form to that tension. Art and furniture, objets d’art and everyday life. Crossing these boundaries, it embodies the very essence of living.Derived from “UNDULATION,” this is a new realm of the art of living created by Kwaika.

BAD LAND

BAD LAND was founded in 1998, inspired by the Euro-style Harley-Davidson customs that emerged primarily in Germany in the mid-1990s. The company introduced this design philosophy—which was virtually unknown in Japan at the time—and the meticulous craftsmanship of German master artisans to the Japanese custom scene, pursuing its own unique style.Rather than aiming for flashy ornamentation, BAD LAND focuses on forms that embody function and necessity, along with the graceful, flowing curves characteristic of the Euro style. Centered on this philosophy, you can explore the history of BAD LAND-style Harley-Davidson customs—a legacy built by Kwaika over the past 30 years.

I don’t really like taking photos. All it takes is pressing the shutter button to capture an image, and the moment I become conscious of trying to make it look more beautiful, I sense a sense of artifice. Still, when I come across a scene that suddenly catches my eye, I find myself pointing the lens at it before I even realize it. It’s less about the intention to create a work of art and more like a trace of having felt something. When I look back at the photos I’ve accumulated over the past twenty years or so, moments and emotions I didn’t notice at the time emerge, like letters that arrived late.“PHOTO by HANA” is a collection of these fragments of my inner world and time—those that have been preserved in this way, and those that will continue to be preserved.
