About the Work
TORSIN-FIELD 30
Thirty TORSION sculptures.
Three twisted bars support each one.
Ninety twisted iron bars stand here.
Heat a single piece of iron, apply force, and twist it.
The faint traces of movement created by this action are repeated across thirty forms,
and eventually transcend their individual shapes to form a single, vast “space.”
The artwork is arranged to follow the elevation changes of the sloping ground.
The circular surfaces, placed at varying heights, are strung together in a series of ascents and descents,
creating a single, large undulation across the entire piece.
It resembles both a wave and a landscape.
Or perhaps it resembles the traces left behind after an invisible force has passed through space.
If you get closer, you’ll see that each individual TORSION has a different twist.
But the moment you step back, they cease to be individual entities,
and, responding to one another, transform into a single, massive collective.
A slender iron wire stretching upward.
A circular surface floating at its apex.
The recurring vertical lines and variations in height evoke a quiet solemnity reminiscent of an altar or cathedral architecture.
At the same time, I superimpose upon this collection the scene at the Sanjūsangen-dō, where countless statues are arranged in a certain order yet
continue to stand as distinct entities.
What was once a small entity on its own,
when two, three, and then thirty of them gather,
begins to alter the very nature of space itself.
There is order, repetition, and variation.
Even though it is still, the whole seems to be moving slowly.
Iron does not move.
However, the force once applied remains within the twist,
and a large wave exists within the difference in elevation.
" TORSION FIELD " is a work in which
individual twists come together,
eventually transforming the entire space into a single "undulation."
